The Azores were the scene of the Portuguese National Skills Championship, held in Ponta Delgada on the island of St. Miguel from 2-6 May 2011.

Approximately 500 people attended the event. Thirty-four skilled professions were represented during the competition with around 180 young people between 18 and 25 years from all regions of the country.

To celebrate the upcoming 41st WorldSkills Competition in London, United Kingdom this coming 5-8 October, UK participants came to take part in the nationals. Three of them were competing (one in jewellery and two in hairdressing) as international experience and there were two Experts there to observe.

The overall event was an initiative to encourage young people to obtain a skilled professional qualification. It is our aim to show them that by improving their occupational attainment and enhancement of the profession it will lead to a central pathway of success for the integration into working life.
